COURSE DESCRIPTION

Learn the research behind and the benefits of using sign language with a variety of special populations in the pediatric outpatient healthcare system.  This course will also provide basic signs for communicating wants and needs, as well as concepts and language relevant to clients and clinicians in the fields of OT, PT, ABA, speech, and psychology.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

As a result of this course participants will be able to:

     -Define the term Sign Language.

     -Label the three parts of the Sign Language Continuum.

     -List at least three pediatric populations that benefit from using sign language.


TARGET AUDIENCE

This course was designed for pediatric healthcare workers such as:

     -occupational therapists

     -physical therapists

     -speech-language therapists

     -psychologists

     -nurses

     -doctors

     -and others!


COURSE LEVEL

This is an introductory-level course. 

No previous sign language is required.

    -Asynchronous 91-minute Online Course via TalentLMS      -Cost $125


COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS & ASSESSMENT METHODS

A certificate will be awarded upon:

     -Completing all slides and videos in the presentation.

     -Passing a brief multiple-choice and matching written assessment, as well as interpreting sign language phrases via video with at least 80% proficiency. The assessment may be repeated three times.

     -Returning the Course Evaluation within 30 days of completion of the course.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Samantha Biarsky is a Speech-Language Pathologist with Fundamental Therapy Solutions in Gainesville, Florida.  She has recently been awarded the Distinguished Early Career Professional (ECP) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). See the link below for all recipients.


Samantha has had a passion for working with children who have special needs since she was in elementary school.  Samantha spent over 3 years doing research on successful early intervention for children on the autism spectrum while completing her undergraduate studies at Ohio State University.  


Ms. Biarsky received her Master's degree in 2017 from Ohio University and has since become an active member of the ASHA Language Learning and Education special interest group as well as the aural rehabilitation special interest group due to her passion for sign language as well as autism spectrum disorder.  


Prior to working at Fundamental Therapy Solutions, Samantha worked as a contract Speech Pathologist where she spent most of her time at a school for children with autism while using a total communication approach. 

Since joining the Fundamental Therapy Solutions team, Samantha has supervised part-time and full-time graduate students.


Samantha is trained in administering the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2nd Edition.  

Samantha enjoys collaborating with other disciplines and is excited to begin a social group with the ABA department, as well as continuing making continuing education courses.

REFUND POLICY

-If Fundamental Therapy Solutions must cancel the course for any reason, a full refund of the registration cost will be issued within two weeks of cancellation.

-Participants who cancel their registration in writing or email up until 3 days prior to the course will receive a full refund less a $50 processing fee. There will be no refunds after the course has been completed.

Complaints must be filed in writing and then will be responded to in writing within 1 week, and then a formal  Zoom meeting will be held if the complaint is not satisfied.  If no resolution is agreed to, a professional mediator will be included dependent on the type of complaint.
