COURSE DESCRIPTION

As healthcare providers, we must be aware of protecting the safety of all individuals in our care. This course will allow the learner to understand how HIV came to be and how it has impacted societies worldwide for the last forty years.

Statistics, risk factors, and symptoms of HIV will be presented to better prepare the healthcare provider for discussions on how to help prevent and recognize HIV in those around us.

The learner will be presented with the stigmas involved for those who live with HIV and seek HIV testing and treatment. This course will discuss the importance of and the various HIV testing methods available.

This course will also provide the learner with a better understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity to help not just one group, but all individuals to prevent or treat HIV effectively.

This course will discuss the stages of HIV, including the most serious and deadly: AIDS.  The course will also present information about how treatment impacts the virus, including a brief discussion about how the virus enters and attacks a cell.

The course will describe the causes behind HIV drug resistance, how it can be treated, and many secondary infections that present themselves due to a weakened immune system caused by the HIV virus.

Finally, the learner will be presented with information about what is needed worldwide to end this terrible epidemic.
